With a building as iconic as the George Hotel in St Kilda, getting a request to build an internal black steel window incorporating multi-panel iGlass to showcase a designer bathroom took our concept of challenge to a new level. In this case, the renovation architect had already worked with clients Andrew and Nicola to determine their design, which was presented to us to build and install.
We approached it by first creating a complete timber template to map the out-of-square opening, and then fabricating the black steel angle and tee section frame with bolt on the custom rolled arch section to make installation possible. The access for 110v power wires was provided including earth lugs, then the iGlass Australia panels were set in place providing a clear view or privacy option at the flick of a switch. To finish, we applied custom made fibreglass beading to achieve the client driven aesthetics, plus 2-pack micaceous iron oxide (MIO) protective coating over abrasive blasted steel. The final 2 pack coat was applied by hand, giving the steel a texture matching the similar existing steel window and door frames found throughout the building.
